Ultrasonic Flow Transmitters: Permanent Wall-Mount Signal Processors for Plant Operations

Quick Answer: Wall-mount ultrasonic flow transmitters give plant engineers a fixed signal processor for clamp-on or inline ultrasonic sensors. Silver Automation Instruments supplies these units with 4-20 mA HART, pulse, and RS485 Modbus outputs for pipe sizes from DN15 to DN6000. Send us your pressure in bar, temperature in °C, pipe size in DN, and flow range for a complete quote.

Why Plant Teams Choose Permanent Wall-Mount Signal Processors

Most plant flow loops need a stable place for signal conversion. A permanent wall-mount processor keeps the electronics separate from the sensor. That matters on hot pipes, vibrating lines, and outdoor installations. We have supplied wall-mount signal processors to water treatment plants in Vietnam and a chemical plant in Thailand. A desalination facility in Saudi Arabia also uses these units for seawater intake monitoring.

In practice, the wall-mount design works well when the control cabinet has limited space. The processor can be mounted near the pipe rack with a clear line of sight for local display. Because many plants already have 4-20 mA input cards, HART is the standard first output for PLC and DCS connections. The wall-mount housing also protects the transmitter from washdown areas when you choose an IP66 enclosure.

Some engineers ask why not use a compact display on the sensor. Large pipes and outdoor pipe runs are not the best place for sensitive electronics. A wall-mount unit keeps the processor at eye level and away from direct sun, heat tracing, or high vibration. We have seen this on customer sites many times.

What to Check Before You Specify a Wall-Mount Transmitter

You need five details before ordering. Pipe size, pipe material, wall thickness, fluid type, and temperature. These inputs decide sensor frequency, mounting method, and signal processor configuration. For a DN200 carbon steel water line at 25 °C, clamp-on sensors pair well with our UFT-WM wall-mount processor. For a DN25 chemical line with PTFE lining, you may need a different sensor frequency and couplant.

Ultrasonic meters do not need a minimum conductivity. They work on demineralized water below 5 µS/cm. For fluids above 300 cP, we check sensor selection before quoting.

The output side is just as important. Most plants ask for 4-20 mA HART with Modbus RTU as a backup. Some custody transfer applications need pulse output for totalizer connection. We configure the UFT-WM for standard 4-20 mA, pulse, and RS485 Modbus in the same unit. Optional Profibus PA and Modbus TCP are available. For chilled water or hot water energy measurement, add the optional PT100 input pair.

Ambient conditions also drive the selection. Our wall-mount processor works from -20 °C to 60 °C. The housing is IP66 when properly installed with cable glands. Power can be 24 V DC or 85 to 265 V AC. In direct sun, use a sunshade. We have seen sites in the Middle East where this addition prevented display failure. For oil and gas sites, ask about Ex d or Ex e wall-mount housings for ATEX Zone 1 or Zone 2.

Recommended Model Pairings from Silver Instruments

For clean water, wastewater, and cooling water lines from DN50 to DN600, use the Silver Instruments UFT-WM wall-mount processor with clamp-on sensors. Typical accuracy is ±1.0% of reading. For fuel, solvents, or aggressive chemicals, use inline spool-piece sensors paired with the same UFT-WM wall-mount processor. This setup can reach ±0.5% of reading on clean liquids after field calibration.

For temporary flow surveys, the wall-mount processor is easy to relocate with clamp-on sensors. You can store up to 16 pipe and fluid configurations. A service team in Singapore used one UFT-WM unit to verify flow balance across 12 cooling water lines in a week. The stored configurations saved setup
